Although well equipped with a pair of Danforth anchors, I took the Bruce as barter for a small job that I did for a client. I really appreciate it's holding power, and it's reputation for re-setting after a wind or tide shift.
As a single-hander who likes to be able to sail on and off the hook in an emergency (or occasionally just to show off,) I wanted my ground tackle easily accessible. The penalty for this is weight on the bow, and now that I am doing more PHRF racing, I resent it a great deal. The 29, like many production boats of her era, has a tendency to hobby horse under certain conditions. The Bruce Roller is custom made for this particular model, and is beefy and secure. It is through-bolted to stainless backing plates under the bow. It is easy enough to pull the anchor and rode out and drop the whole package into my deck box, but the roller assembly weighs enough to be a factor.
I lengthened both of the roller-bolts in order to add Schaeffer boom-bails; one as a guard to keep the anchor stock from pivoting up and breaking my Harken furling drum, and the other to hang a block on for my assymetrical spinnaker tack down-haul. My next project may be to re-engineer the roller-mount so it comes off and on easily during the racing season, and if I win the lottery soon I may even $pring for a Fortress folding anchor.
